Things to do in Hopetoun with Kids

Hopetoun is a small coastal town in the south of Western Australia located between Albany and Esperance. It is a beautiful spot for a beach getaway and to explore the Fitzgerald River National Park. The people are friendly, the beaches are amazing, and being able to relax in such a peaceful part of Western Australia is what made this place a highlight for us.

We stayed in Hopetoun in a gorgeous Airbnb, but there is other accommodation including the Hopetoun Motel and Chalet VillageWavecrest Village and Hopetoun Caravan Park.

Hopetoun is a great location to base yourself to explore the East portion of Fitzgerald River National Park. It is one of the largest and most botanically significant National Parks in Australia and is recognised globally for its diversity of flora and fauna. The beaches and rugged scenery here is stunning, and you can take a walk along many trails and even hike up East Mount Barren. If your kids are anything like Marcus, they will love finding all the quartz and different glittery rocks.

We love beachcombing, and there are plenty of stunning beaches to wander along and look for treasures in Hopetoun. Search for emu tracks, splash in the beautiful turquoise blue water and play in the sand white.

At the end of the main street, you can walk (or drive) out to the end of the groyne and take in the view. If you want you can throw in a line off the town jetty and see if you can catch some herring or skippy. There is a great sheltered spot for swimming here and a pontoon with a slide for the kids (or grown ups).

Hopetoun has a great kids playground with a jumping pillow. We all now how much kids love those. Located by the beach, with covered tables to have some lunch or a snack, this is a great spot to sit back, relax and let the kids burn off some energy.

Grab a meal at Christines Kitchen. Don’t be fooled by appearances, the food and coffee here is really good. We did find the local Port pub here was a bit kid unfriendly, but I have heard the Port Cafe is good. There is also a bakery if you want to grab and go.

If you are looking for a place to get away from it all, we highly recommend Hopetoun.
