Sleep Better at Night With This Easy Hack

Sleep Better

Not sleeping well?  Are your children not sleeping well?  Want to sleep better at night? Sleep is so important because a lack of sleep can contribute to a variety of health problems.  There are lots of things that can contribute to us not sleeping well at night, one of them being electromagnetic fields.

What are Electromagnetic Fields?

Electromagnetic fields are created by our electricity system.  They are produced by high voltage transmission lines and the power lines in your street. They are produced by the wiring in your home and the power cord to your appliances. Even the appliance itself produces an electromagnetic field.

When an appliance such as a lamp on your bedside table is switched on at the power point and in use, it will produce a magnetic field.  When an appliance is switched on at the power point, but not in use, it will NOT produce a magnetic field.

The big problem with magnetic fields is that it is very difficult to shield ourselves from them. Electromagnetic fields travel through everything. Including our bodies!

Did you know that electromagnetic fields from our household wiring will radiate up to 1.2 metres into the room?

The Link Between Electromagnetic Fields, Melatonin and Not Sleeping Well.

Being exposed to electromagnetic fields over extended periods (such as when you are sleeping) can disrupt your pineal gland and its melatonin production.   Melatonin is a hormone.   Its levels vary in 24 hour cycles and are controlled by our body clock. Normally we produce less melatonin in bright light, with levels increasing at night. Melatonin is important in helping us regulate our internal body clock helping our bodies to fall sleep (at night) and to wake (during the day).  If you are not sleeping well, then your body produces less melatonin.

Research shows that melatonin it is important for the proper functioning of our immune systems. It is an antioxidant and scavenges free radicals which helps to reduce inflammation in the body. It may also slow down cellular ageing, including ageing of your brain.  Melatonin assists with ridding the body of cancer cells, and studies have shown that melatonin can also protect you from many types of cancers.  Melatonin has a calming effect on several reproductive hormones, which may explain why it seems to protect against sex hormone driven cancers such as breast cancer.

Sleeping around electromagnetic fields affect the production of melatonin,  strains the body’s immune system and reduces its ability to rest and recuperate.  This is also why you might not be getting a good night’s sleep, feeling unrefreshed when you wake up.

As it is very difficult to shield ourselves from electromagnetic fields. The best (and easiest) way to avoid them is to create distance.  Electromagnetic fields follow the inverse square law – as you double the distance away from the source, you reduce your exposure by 75%.

Electromagnetic fields will drastically drop off the further you move away from the source.

6 Tips to Sleep Better Every Night

1. Try to avoid keeping electrical appliances in the bedroom altogether.

2. If you must have appliances in the bedroom, such as bedside lamps, or a television, make sure they are at least 2 metres from the bed,

Keep television away from bed to sleep better

3.  Switch off electrical appliances at the power point before you go to sleep each night.  This will also save you money on your power bill.

4. Keep the appliance as close to the power point as possible so there are not cords (including extension cords) scattered everywhere and running under the bed.

5. As electromagnetic fields can move through the walls, we can be impacted by appliances in other rooms of the house. Refrigerators, washing machines, freezers, televisions or solar power inverters that share a bedroom wall can impact on our sleep. This also includes the meter box, which can emit very high electromagnetic fields. Meter boxes are often located on the exterior of bedroom walls. Make sure your bedhead is not on against a wall with an appliance or the meter box behind it.

6. If you can, get your electrician get your electrician to install a master switch so you can shut down the electricity supply to the house at night. They can do this while keeping certain circuits on so your refrigerator won’t turn off.  This will also save you money on your power bill.

Of course there are many other things that can cause us to not have a good night’s sleep, but reducing or eliminating electromagnetic fields in our bedrooms is a good start to getting that restful night’s sleep we all need.
