7 Fun Things to Do With Kids in Merredin

Merredin is a small town located in the Wheatbelt area of Western Australia. Most people drive straight through on their way between Perth and Kalgoorlie, but we think its definitely a great little town full of history and has heaps more to do than you think. We spent a day here exploring, and wanted to share our favourite things to do in Merredin.

Take a Photo of the Merredin Silo Art

The silo art on the way into Merredin from Perth is hard to miss. It is part of the Public Silo Art Trail and urban artist Kyle Hughes-Odgers created this amazing artwork showing the importance of agriculture to Merredin and the Wheatbelt on 4 of the 8 concrete silo cells.

Take a Hike Along Merredin Peak Trail

Merredin Peak is a large granite monolith, a cultural reserve and important place for the Njaki Njaki Aboriginal People. Take a comfortable walk through the bush and then climb up this large granite outcrop. You will be greeted with amazing views across the town of Merredin and the surrounding rural areas. The rock is steep and can be slippery so take care. 

Stop and Have a Picnic at Merredin Railway Dam

A beautiful shady spot to stop and have a picnic but also full of history. The dam was built in 1893 at the same time as the railway. Additionally, a stone wall was built around Merredin Peak. This wall catches and directs water towards a stone-lined channel leading to the dam. This was all constructed from rock taken from the Peak.

Wander Through the Ruins of the World War II Military Hospital

Wandering through the bushland, you will spy old building foundations, scattered here and there, the remains of a past World War II Military Hospital. Asking at the museum we found out that this hospital was sited here in Merredin, because it was deemed too far away for bombers to reach. We wandered around here wondering what each of the building might have been.

Take a Visit to the Railway Museum and Historical Society. 

Not just for train buffs, this is a museum is showing us the history of this once major rail hub, and is also full of Merredin’s history, with the local volunteers being full of knowledge and willing to go the extra mile. 

Check out the Military Museum

For boys that like guns and tanks, and for everyone else who is interested in military history, Merredin has another amazing museum not to be missed full of military artefacts, such as guns, sea mines and even large vehicles including tanks and jets. The local volunteer was again a wealth of knowledge and happy to share this with us as we wandered through.

Take in a Show at Cummins Theatre

This beautiful, now heritage-listed building, was built in Merredin by Mr James Cummins. Mr Cummins purchased the Tivoli Theatre in Coolgardie, dismantled it and sent it in pieces to Merredin by train. Here, the thirty year old theatre was rebuilt and was opened to the public on 10 October 1928. They also run guided tours of the venue including the foyer museum, main auditorium, stage, backstage areas, kitchen, Tivoli Room and gardens.

We love a road trip, and since it's a long drive between Perth and Kalgoorlie, Merredin is definitely a place we recommend visiting with the family.
